Roberto Martínez clarifies information about Ronaldo’s future with the Portugal national team after the Euro 2024 defeat.
Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez stated that it is “too early” to say whether Cristiano Ronaldo has played his last match for the national team after Portugal’s elimination from Euro 2024.
Portugal lost 3-5 on penalties to France in the quarterfinals after a goalless draw in 90 minutes of regulation time and two extra time periods.
Speaking about CR7’s future, Martinez said, “It is still too early and crude to talk about that after the match, especially since no personal decisions have been made yet.”
The loss to France at the Volksparkstadion in the early morning of July 6th (UK time) marked Ronaldo’s 212th match in the national team’s colors. Previously, the 39-year-old superstar had scored a total of 130 goals for his country, leading the list of the highest scorers in international football history, far ahead of the second place (Messi with 108 goals).
However, looking at the 39-year-old striker’s performances at Euro 2024, where he struggled most of the time to regain his former glory, it is regrettable that Ronaldo has yet to score a goal in this year’s European Championship, except for penalty kicks in the round of 16 match and the recent quarterfinal.
This is the first time in Ronaldo’s career that he has not scored a goal in a major international tournament (including Euro and World Cup), and the record of 10 shots without scoring at Euro 2024 is also the highest number of attempts without a goal in a Euro tournament, tied with Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne in 2016.
Ronaldo’s last Euro tournament ends in disappointment and deep sadness, but as CR7 himself once said: “Giving up is not in my vocabulary.” Can he rise and continue?
