According to Stefan Borson, a former financial advisor for Man City, Rodri could potentially be banned by UEFA from participating in the Champions League with Man City at the beginning of the 2024/25 season due to drama during the Euro 2024 victory celebration with the Spain national team.
Rodri and his teammate Alvaro Morata are facing the risk of being banned from international matches with La Roja. The duo made politically charged comments while celebrating their Euro 2024 victory, prompting an immediate investigation by UEFA.
Furthermore, Stefan Borson, speaking to Football Insider, suggested that Rodri might miss UEFA matches in September if a ban is imposed. This means the 28-year-old could miss some of Man City’s Champions League matches, a competition governed by UEFA.
However, Borson believes the ban might not extend to Man City matches, considering Rodri’s indispensable role in the team’s lineup in recent years.
Borson shared: “The ban could apply to Man City’s matches. The suspension might affect all matches organized by UEFA. If he is banned, I think it is likely the penalty will apply to a few of Spain’s international matches scheduled for September.
“The penalty will not significantly impact Man City. From Man City’s perspective, they clearly don’t want to miss Rodri because he is very important. When he plays, Man City rarely loses. If the ban is enforced, he will get some rest for a few matches. The ban could apply to Man City’s matches, but it probably won’t have a major impact.”
During the Euro 2024 victory celebration, Rodri and Alvaro Morata to “Gibraltar is Spanish.” Both were subsequently accused by the governing body, with the disciplinary committee having the authority to impose a ban on both club and national team matches.
The Gibraltar Football Association stated, “the provocative and offensive nature of the celebration surrounding the Spain men’s national team’s Euro 2024 victory. Football has no place for such behavior.”
As of now, no official announcement has been made, but it is likely that the duo will face appropriate penalties for their actions.
