Group A Euro 2024: Germany Overcomes Challenges

Group A  Euro 2024 promises surprises with the presence of the Swiss national team. They will face host Germany, Hungary, and Scotland.

Germany (host)
Regarding the German team, with the home-field advantage and many top-class stars, they are the highest-rated team in this group. However, it cannot be denied that Die Mannschaft has declined significantly in recent years.

Since winning the 2014 World Cup, the German team has only advanced as far as the semi-finals at Euro 2016. The other major tournaments saw the team exit quite early, including two consecutive World Cups where they were eliminated in the group stage.

Moreover, the three-time European champions have not had a good run-up to the tournament.

In the last four matches under new coach Nagelsmann, they have only won once, with the rest being draws and losses, raising doubts about another unsuccessful tournament.

However, this is not the first time German football has been in this situation. They entered the 2006 World Cup at home with doubts about their performance, having been eliminated early at Euro 2004.

After that, the German tank still reached the semi-finals, only losing to the eventual champions, Italy. This time, with a refreshed squad, fans can fully believe in their ability to pass the group stage and possibly go far.

Switzerland
The Swiss national team is a familiar guest at continental stages like the Euros or World Cups, so it’s no surprise that the team from the land of clocks is rated second in this group after Germany.

At the Euro 2020 finals, Switzerland reached the quarter-finals after unexpectedly defeating the championship contender, France, and only stopped before Spain.

With that, Switzerland is fully capable of advancing if they play to their ability. They are even ready to compete for the top spot with Germany.

Hungary
For the Hungarian team, this is the third consecutive time they have participated in the biggest continental football festival at the national team level. Although Hungary is no longer a powerhouse in European football like in the 1950s under Puskas, they are still a tough opponent.

Though Hungary did not progress far in the last two Euros, fans have seen their readiness to cause trouble for any opponent.

Moreover, with four third-place spots advancing to the next round, Hungary does not necessarily need to secure one of the top two positions in the group.

Scotland
Scotland also marks its second consecutive appearance at a Euro finals, having performed excellently in the qualifiers by defeating Norway to join Spain in securing tickets to Germany this summer.

The stature of the Scottish team is considered the most modest among the three teams and is only seen as on par with Hungary. However, no opponent should be complacent against this British team if they don’t want to pay the price.
