Harry Kane warns his England teammates that their 1-0 defeat to Iceland was a wake-up call to prepare for the championship before Euro 2024.
The England national team faces the risk of failure at Euro 2024 if they do not learn from the embarrassing 0-1 defeat to Iceland in their final preparatory friendly. This is the stern warning from captain Harry Kane warns to his teammates.
The shocking loss to the team from the small Nordic island nation has shaken the Three Lions’ hopes of winning the championship. Immediately after the match, the boos from the fans at Wembley reflected the immense disappointment with Gareth Southgate’s squad’s performance. According to Kane, the defeat to Iceland is like a wake-up call for the team before heading into the battle at Euro 2024.
“This could be a good wake-up call for everyone to realize that things are not going to be as easy as people think. There is a lot of work to be done. Sometimes we need a wake-up call like this,” Harry Kane frankly acknowledged.
The England captain pointed out several shortcomings that the team needs to address immediately if they do not want to repeat the bitter failure at Qatar. First is the defense, which has not been truly solid, especially against long balls. The next is patience in ball control to create quality attacking opportunities. Lastly, there is the intensity in duels to seize chances against opponents.
“We have dropped below our standards when out of possession, and that is something we need to review and improve. Perhaps there wasn’t enough determination in duels, second balls, and winning those battles. We did not do that well,” the Bayern Munich striker commented.
The Tottenham striker himself experienced a forgettable moment at the 2022 World Cup when he failed to score from the penalty spot to keep hopes alive for reaching the semifinals against France. However, Kane asserts that he has overcome that pain and is ready to shine at Euro 2024.
The England national team is currently regarded as a top contender for the Euro 2024 title. They will kick off their campaign against Serbia in the group stage on June 15. According to Kane, his team remains very confident and eager to win the championship. However, they need to give their best effort and have a bit of luck to achieve their highest goal in Germany this summer.
