Harry Maguire has admitted that it’s time for the England national team to secure a title as they head to Germany for Euro 2024 this summer.
The Three Lions have made significant progress in recent years under Southgate. At the 2018 World Cup, England reached the semifinals, and at Euro 2020, Southgate’s squad advanced to the final, only to lose to Italy on penalties. This is why England are considered one of the top contenders for the Euro 2024 title.
According to Harry Maguire, the key to England’s success lies with none other than Gareth Southgate, the England manager whom Maguire trusts for creating an environment that brings out the best in players.
Speaking to Sky Sport, Maguire said, “He’s done a lot of little things, he knows the importance of bonding the group together, making everyone enjoy training, making everyone want to play for their country.”
“It’s a great time for England, we feel we’re in a good place and this is a tournament that I’m really looking forward to – we’ll go there to win. We haven’t lifted a trophy for a long time – but we’ve been very close.”
Harry Maguire also discussed the difference between competing in a long-term tournament versus a short-term one. The Manchester United defender stated, “A short-term tournament is decided on moments and you’ve got to make sure you’re in those moments to dominate. That’s where your big players step up and create magical moments.”
As Harry Maguire noted, Southgate has called up a star-studded provisional squad to prepare for Euro 2024. England have had their first training session and will play a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 4 before finalizing their squad of 26 players who will travel to Germany in pursuit of the title.
