According to a report, Kylian Mbappé has become the primary owner of Caen, a team currently playing in Ligue 2.
Kylian Mbappé has fulfilled his childhood dream by officially joining Real Madrid and was warmly welcomed by the fans during his unveiling at the Santiago Bernabéu. But the French superstar may soon experience another warm welcome, similar to that from Los Blancos supporters.
Specifically, Le Parisien revealed that the new Royal Club signing spent 20 million euros to acquire a majority stake in the club Caen. Mbappé will become the owner of Caen alongside Pierre-Antoine Capton, who is currently the chairman of the club’s supervisory board, making him one of the youngest club owners in Europe.
In the past, Mbappé almost joined Les Vikings, Caen’s nickname, before deciding to move to Monaco. The report indicates that Mbappé does not plan to make significant changes to Caen upon his arrival and will maintain the club’s current status. Given his move to Los Blancos, the French player is unlikely to be frequently involved with the Ligue 2 club in the coming years.
Ziad Hammoud, currently the CEO of Mbappé’s image management company, is expected to become the new president of Caen. The club has previously had notable players such as N’Golo Kanté and William Gallas, who have played for the French national team. Their best finish in the top league was fifth place during the 1991/92 season. Last season, Caen finished sixth in Ligue 2.
Caen spent five seasons in Ligue 1 before being relegated to the second division in 2019, finishing 19th in the standings. After narrowly avoiding relegation again in the 2020/21 season, Caen has made efforts to return to the top flight over the past three seasons, finishing seventh, fifth, and most recently sixth.
