Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has admitted that key center-back Antonio Rudiger experienced a thigh issue during the final group stage match of Euro 2024 against Switzerland.
Germany finished the Euro 2024 group stage unbeaten after a hard-fought draw against Switzerland. Despite playing at home with enthusiastic support from the fans, Nagelsmann’s team had to wait until the final moments to breathe a sigh of relief with a point, securing the top spot in Group A.
However, Nagelsmann brought some worry to the German supporters by admitting that key defender Antonio Rudiger had a thigh problem, although the 31-year-old managed to complete the match.
Speaking after the game, Nagelsmann said: “Toni had a bit of an issue with his thigh. We’ll have to see how it goes. I hope it’s nothing serious. We’ll see. It could be quite troublesome.”
In addition, Die Mannschaft fans are uneasy about the defense as Jonathan Tah, Rudiger’s partner in the Euro 2024 campaign, will be unavailable for the round of 16 due to suspension after receiving a yellow card against Switzerland, having accumulated the required number of bookings.
Rudiger, the Real Madrid star, played the full 90 minutes in the match against Switzerland. The former Chelsea star made three tackles and one clearance throughout the match. He also won five out of seven duels and completed 79 out of his 86 passes. Additionally, he made three long passes in the game, showcasing an overall strong performance.
Facing Switzerland, Germany demonstrated their strength by pressuring the opponent from the very beginning, but it was Nagelsmann’s team that conceded first after a goal by Ndoye. Despite rallying strongly afterward, it was not until the final minutes of stoppage time that the home fans had a chance to celebrate a goal with Niclas Fullkrug’s equalizer, securing a valuable point.
In the round of 16, Germany will face the second-placed team from Group C, likely to be either England or Denmark.
