Veteran midfielder Jesus Navas officially bids farewell to the Spanish national team after their 2-1 victory over England in the EURO 2024 final, held early on July 14th.
Ahead of the EURO 2024 final, midfielder Navas made a notable announcement to the media regarding this decision. The former Man City star shared: “Morata told me that it was time for me to speak up because this would be my last match for the national team. Being here after so many years shows that I’ve done things right, and it would be wonderful if the whole team could end with this trophy – we deserve it! Even at 38, I am still excited about everything, helping the national team, my country… but in the end, I have to make a choice for myself.”
When asked about the possibility of extending his playing career, the EURO 2024 champion expressed: “No! I’ve decided to help Sevilla until January 2024, and that is my final decision. I don’t think I’ll change my mind, and I accept that.”
In the final match against England, Jesus Navas did not play as he was on the bench. The player, born in 1985, made his debut for Spain in 2009 and has earned 56 caps in the following years – including three matches in this summer’s EURO finals in Germany.
Navas started the final group stage match against Albania, came off the bench in the round of 16 against Georgia, and started the semi-final against France in the right-back position, replacing the suspended Dani Carvajal.
With the EURO championship with Spain, Navas became the player with the most major titles at the international level, boasting four major trophies. Among these, he has celebrated EURO victories twice, one World Cup win, and one Nations League title with “La Roja.”
The Spanish football legends from the golden generation that achieved the “treble” of EURO 2008, 2012, and the 2010 World Cup, such as Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xavi, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres… have all been surpassed by Jesus Navas after EURO 2024.
