Midfielder Otavio of the Portuguese national team, Ronaldo’s teammate suffers injury and will officially miss Euro 2024 this summer.
During the final match of the Saudi King’s Cup, Al Nassr’s midfielder Otavio did not play the full 90 minutes due to an injury. Although he was initially called up by coach Roberto Martinez for Portugal’s Euro 2024 preparations, medical evaluations have confirmed that the 29-year-old player will not recover in time for the tournament this summer.
Receiving this news, coach Roberto Martinez expressed his disappointment: “It’s sad news. Losing Otavio makes me very sad. He is a dedicated player, always an example in training and on the field. Otavio played very well in the qualifiers. These things are hard to avoid in a player’s career, but it makes me sad.”
In his first season with Al Nassr, Otavio impressed by contributing 11 goals for the Saudi Pro League giants. The former Porto star, in partnership with compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, formed a remarkable duo at Al Nassr. Although they did not win any titles this season, the duo left a significant impression.
Immediately, the Spanish strategist called up midfielder Matheus Nunes, who is currently with Manchester City. The 25-year-old star has just completed his first season under coach Guardiola at Man City.
In contrast to Otavio, Nunes did not have a particularly successful season. Despite The Citizens’ historic fourth consecutive Premier League title, Nunes did not contribute significantly to this achievement. The former Wolves star made only 24 appearances for Man City, without scoring any goals and providing three assists.
Like Otavio, Nunes was born in Brazil but plays for the Portuguese national team, where he has earned 12 caps and scored two goals. Nunes was also part of the squad that participated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After defeating Finland in their first friendly, the “European Selecao” will have their final warm-up match against Croatia before heading to Germany for Euro 2024.
