Scotland matches a forgettable record at Euro after being eliminated in 2024 with a painful defeat to Hungary
End day (June 23), Scotland suffered a 0-1 defeat against Hungary, officially eliminating them from Euro 2024. This was a disappointing result for Steven Clarke’s team, made even worse by Scotland leaving Germany with an unwanted record.
Scotland managed to earn only 1 point and took just 17 shots in their 3 matches in Group A of Euro 2024. This is the lowest tally since the group stage was introduced at Euro 1980, matching the record set by Northern Ireland in 2016.
Scotland began the tournament with a 1-5 defeat to hosts Germany on opening night. In that match, Scotland managed only one shot, marking their most forgettable night at Euro 2024.
In their next two matches against Switzerland and Hungary, Scotland showed some improvement but it was not enough to make history. Scotland has never progressed beyond the group stage in any major tournament they have participated in. Besides the Euro, the Tartan Army has competed in 8 World Cups but has never advanced far in the competition.
Fans have the right to be disappointed, and there might be discussions behind the scenes about changing the head coach. Clarke is contracted to be the head coach until 2026 but might face the possibility of being sacked upon returning home.
