England’s coach Gareth Southgate revealed that striker Harry Kane’s boldness to come on the field to take the penalty kick during a friendly match against the Bosnia & Herzegovina national team.
Facing a Bosnia & Herzegovina team considered weaker in all aspects, the England squad easily defeated their opponents in a recent friendly match. This win boosted Gareth Southgate’s team’s confidence, allowing them to approach their participation in Euro 2024 in Germany with a relaxed mindset.
Harry Kane, expected to lead the “Three Lions” towards their first Euro title in history, scored the decisive goal in the victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. Following the match, Gareth Southgate disclosed that the 30-year-old striker expressed his desire to take the penalty awarded to England.
The 53-year-old coach stated, “Kane showed bravery in asking to enter the field and take the penalty, which, of course, was not possible. The plan for Kane today was to play for 30 minutes, and he will start on Friday.”
Southgate added, “Some players need to play, they need more time and they need more opportunities on Friday. That’s why we put Harry Kane on the field. He needs to play a bit today and then repeat that.”
As for Harry Kane, England’s most prolific striker has not played since being injured in the Champions League semi-final second leg; however, he sees it as an advantage for himself.
Kane shared, “I feel very good. Resting at the end of the season is a preventive measure since there is an important campaign coming up, so we don’t want to risk anything. Ultimately, it’s a good opportunity to have a quality break after the season with the club. I am sure to play on Friday and will be ready for the group stage.
Being absent in the latter part of the season is almost beneficial for me as it provides more rest than planned. I’m not the type of player who needs a lot of time to regain form, and of course, scoring helps me find that feeling again.”
Throughout the 90 minutes at St James’s Park, the England team dominated for the majority of the game. However, it wasn’t until the second half that the “Three Lions” fans celebrated a goal when Cole Palmer opened the scoring from the penalty spot. The subsequent goals by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane came naturally, sealing a 3-0 victory for Southgate’s squad.
In the next 4 days, England will have one final friendly match against Iceland before officially finalizing the squad and heading to Germany for Euro 2024.
