Before Euro 2024, Southgate made statements aimed at reducing the pressure on Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.
In his first season in Spain, Bellingham was honored as the La Liga Player of the Season after scoring 19 goals in the league, helping Real clinch the title with a 10-point lead. Gareth Southgate warmly welcomed Jude Belligham back to the England national team after the midfielder won the Champions League with Real Madrid.
Bellingham’s return could be a significant boost for England, especially after the humiliating 0-1 defeat to Iceland in their final friendly before Euro 2024.
When asked if Bellingham is the key to upgrading England’s lineup, Southgate responded:
“I’m sure Bellingham will give his best, but he’s not solely responsible for that. I know Bellingham can handle pressure, but we’re not placing everything on Jude. We have many talented players, and striving for success in this tournament is a collective effort. Of course, he’s a player with a fantastic mentality and will have a big impact on the team.”
It’s widely known that Bellingham made substantial contributions in the royal white of Spain. Therefore, there will be an invisible pressure on Bellingham upon his return to the national team, a burden he must bear.
In the shocking defeat to Iceland, Southgate paired Mainoo with Rice in midfield, a move that received criticism, especially regarding Mainoo’s position. However, these were experimental choices, and if Southgate has Bellingham, adjustments could be made.
Recently, England’s legendary striker Owen selected the 11 standout players for England at Euro 2024. In that lineup, Bellingham and Rice were chosen to partner in midfield, which could be an idea Southgate considers.
With Euro 2024 just around the corner, Southgate and his team are focused on reaching their peak form. England begins their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 17th in Gelsenkirchen. Securing three points will undoubtedly be Southgate’s aim for his team.
