Manchester United is dealing with fresh injury concerns as Marcus Rashford and Antony had to leave the pitch early during a friendly match against Real Betis, adding to the club’s growing list of injured players.
The Red Devils are facing a serious injury crisis ahead of the new season, with forwards Marcus Rashford and Antony being forced off the field in a recent friendly against Real Betis.
This is worrying news for manager Erik ten Hag’s squad, which has already endured a series of injuries during their pre-season preparations.
In the friendly match in San Diego, Rashford had to leave the pitch just 20 minutes into the second half after a collision with Real Betis midfielder Sergi Altimira. The player stayed down for a few minutes and couldn’t continue. Initial reports suggest that Rashford informed the medical team that he had suffered an impact injury to his right ankle.
Shortly after, Antony, who came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, also had to leave the field just 23 minutes after coming on. The Brazilian appeared visibly frustrated as he left, throwing his wristband to the ground and heading straight to the tunnel with a physiotherapist.
Although the extent of Antony’s injury is less clear than Rashford’s, it remains a worrying sign for Manchester United.
These new injuries occurred just hours after the club confirmed that new signing Leny Yoro would be sidelined for three months with a suspected broken metatarsal.
Yoro sustained this injury in a previous friendly against Arsenal, where Manchester United lost 1-2. In the same match, forward Rasmus Hojlund also suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for around six weeks.
These injury concerns pose significant challenges for Ten Hag in selecting his lineup for the upcoming matches. Especially in the forward positions, where Hojlund was expected to be a key addition to United’s attack. Newcomer Joshua Zirkzee might be pushed into the starting lineup sooner than expected to fill the gap.
The current situation also raises many questions for Manchester United ahead of the new season. They still have two more friendly matches, against Liverpool this weekend and then the Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley next weekend. These matches will be crucial opportunities for Ten Hag to reassess his squad and find solutions for the positions affected by injuries.
With several key players facing fitness issues, Manchester United may need to consider bolstering their squad in the final days of the summer transfer window. This is particularly important if Rashford’s and Antony’s injuries turn out to be more severe than initially thought.
In this context, United’s young players may have more opportunities to feature in the upcoming matches.
As the 2023/2024 Premier League season approaches, Manchester United and their fans will certainly hope that the injury situation improves soon. The team’s adaptability and squad depth will face a stern test in the first few weeks of the new season.
